Bird Boxes and Nests
Why get birdhouses? That’s a good question. For example, just one great tit can collect hundreds of caterpillars in a garden in a single day—caterpillars that would otherwise damage fruit trees. This way, you don’t have to use large amounts of pesticides. Insects on the ground or walls are picked up by house sparrows or wagtails when they feed their young. Swifts, on the other hand, regulate the amount of insects higher up in the air—their flocks, together with swallows and martins, form a kind of natural biological shield above towns. At night, this role is taken over by bats.
Besides that, watching birds in flight or at a feeder is a wonderful experience. As a bonus, you also get the beautiful bird songs with which they reward you for providing them a place to live.
Birdhouses and nests serve for birds to nest—that means laying eggs and raising chicks by a single breeding pair. Birdhouses are not intended for feeding birds. For that purpose, there are bird feeders, which you can find in our range under the category Bird Feeders. Properly designed birdhouses for wild birds do not have perches, because those only increase the risk of predator attacks. A perch actually helps a predator cling to the birdhouse when raiding a nest. That’s why our birdhouses don’t have perches. If you are looking for birdhouses to install in insulation during apartment building renovations, we have a separate category called Building Birdhouses.
For birds, a safe shelter—a birdhouse or nest—is just as important as having enough food. Natural options (such as tree cavities) are increasingly scarce, so if you want to help birds, we offer a wide range of solutions. If, in addition to feeding, you’d like to provide them with a nesting place where they can raise their young, we have birdhouses for individual species. You can choose from quality wooden houses made in our own workshop, as well as long-lasting wood-concrete houses from foreign manufacturers—“made for life.” For swifts, we offer a variety of birdhouses, and you’ll find a separate category dedicated to them. If you’d simply like to feed birds in the winter or give them a source of water, select one of our attractive feeders or birdbaths available in the Bird Feeders section. Feeders don’t allow nesting, but they do help many species survive the winter. Birdbaths, on the other hand, provide water in summer—for drinking or bathing. And on top of that, they make your garden more beautiful :)
