Audio recorder for birds, amphibians, and terrestrial wildlife. The Wildlife Acoustics SONG METER SM4 is a proven, industry-grade wildlife recorder, specially designed to deliver high-quality recordings of birds, frogs, and other animal sounds. It sets the standard for animal acoustic recorders.
With the ability to store terabytes of data and record in the field for several months, the SONG METER SM4 provides scientists with a flexible tool for species inventory, presence/absence surveys, endangered species detection, and habitat monitoring.
The SM4 features two second-generation built-in microphones, producing higher-quality recordings than previous SONG METER microphone generations. The low-noise microphones offer excellent signal-to-noise ratio, capturing more of the sounds that matter.
Stereo Recording
Two recording channels for greater recording flexibility.
Take advantage of the SM4’s dual-channel capability to ensure continuity of recordings—even if one microphone is disabled due to wildlife interference. Record in stereo or mono using the built-in microphones, or connect one or two wired microphones or hydrophones. Adding extra cables to an external microphone allows you to capture sounds from distant wildlife, such as birds in a forest canopy or frogs in a nearby pond.
Easy Scheduling
Choose a preset recording schedule or create your own.
To get started quickly, the SM4 includes easy-to-use quick start schedules, such as sunrise to sunset. You can also customize schedules for specific wildlife recording needs. The free SM4 Configurator software can be used to configure settings and schedules from a computer. The SM4 Configurator software also offers a security lock option to prevent accidental changes to deployment and recording settings.
Large Storage Capacity
Store terabytes of data.
The SM4 has two SD card slots compatible with SDHC and SDXC cards. When equipped with two 1TB cards, it can store up to two terabytes of data.
Additionally, you can save space using W4V compression. This format doubles your SD card capacity without noticeable loss of recording quality. The resulting W4V files can be opened and/or converted to uncompressed WAV files using the free Kaleidoscope software.
